Chrome Uncaught (in promise) error

Dave SlackFriday, August 2, 2024

On the 1st August a new version of Google Chrome was released and with this version there is a new error affecting any websites using Google Tag Manager.

Chrome Uncaught (in promise) error

To see the error

  1. Go to any website in Google Chrome browser
  2. Right-click on the page
  3. Hit inspect
  4. Go to the console tab

You should see the error:

Uncaught (in promise)
TypeError: Failed to execute 'getValue' on 'CookieDeprecationLabel': Illegal invocation

Many websites are affected by this including Huyton Web Services, Adobe and Bootstrap, however not all websites are affected including Amazon and Github. There doesn’t seem to be a lot about this issue yet.

Edit: 8th August

This seems to have been fixed as of today. If this is still a problem for your website please update to the latest version of Google Chrome.

Edit: 7th August

There seems to be some movement and we might have confirmation Google are looking into this.

Edit: 5th August

Still no updates from Google, but there are a few places with info

The error does not seem to break anything on any of our client’s websites, but if you are affected the only fix seems to be to comment out the Google Analytics code until there is a fix.
